Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, Aug 15 2009

Billed as the world toughest hillclimb.  7.6 miles long with average grade of 12%.  If you ever driven up this mountain you'll know how though this hill climb will be.  When I drove up and down this mountain two years ago, it was more scary going up then down!  A lot of people should not be allowed to drive up or down the mountain, they just take up too much room on the narrow road with no guard rails.  Going down the mountain I had to get my wife to open her door to see how much road we had on the right side (cliff side) since this car going up was hogging the road and we were on the outside of the road!

It's already sold out.  This year it took about 3 days to sell out instead of the 2 hours or so it took last year.  The economic downturn has affected it.

I'm signed up to do the hill climb and I have to prepare for it over the summer.  I plan to get a mountain bike crank on my road bike to get the gearing I need for this hill climb.  I'll just have one chain ring on the front for the ride, I don't exactly know the gearing I'll use but it will be something like 30 in the front and a 11-28 in the back.

If I can do the climb in 1:30, that's one hour & 30 minutes, I'll be very happy.  The record for the climb is held by Tom Danielson at 49 minutes!

If you want to do Mt. Washington, you can sign up for the Newton Revenge ride in July here: http://www.newtonsrevenge.com/  It's the same ride, just different name.
